General advice The information on this website should not be regarded as a substitute for a full discussion with your GP or specialist. The main risk factors for diseases of the arteries are smoking, hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity and a positive family history. Therefore, stopping smoking, taking regular exercise, a healthy diet, and treating diabetes and hypertension are the cornerstones of the management of any arterial problem. Your GP will usually be able to help you with advice and any necessary tests or medications. He or she may then decide to refer you to a Vascular Surgeon. Problems related to veins may result from a genetic predisposition (varicose veins often run in the family), or from previous thrombosis (DVT) or injuries. Keeping your feet up or wearing comfortable support stockings may relieve many venous symptoms. | ![]() | |||||||
