Before

Botulinum toxin may be used in the form of Botox or Dysport. The substance is bioengineered and in recommended doses can be used to soften facial lines or fine wrinkles and may be used to prevent the development of frown lines or crow's feet.

It is advisable not to undergo cosmetic treatment if you are pregnant or breast feeding, taking certain antibiotics, suffer from neuromuscular disorders or take blood thinning medicines. Your specialist should counsel you thoroughly before commencing treatment.

Treatment itself is relatively quick and does not require an anaesthetic. Most people experience slight discomfort at the site of injections, but this is fleeting. Results may not become apparent for 2 to 3 days and the full effect may take up to 2 weeks to show itself. One treatment may last for as long as 12 months or as short as 3 months. Further courses of treatment are possible if required.

Side effects

These are relatively minor such as mild headache or symptoms like early flu. Paracetamol is usually all that is required. If injections are carried out close to the eyebrow, you may notice slight drooping of the eyelid. This can be treated with eyedrops or left to disappear on its own.
