Group leader:
Mark van der Giezen (m.vandergiezen{at}qmul.ac.uk).
I originally studied unusual hydrogen-producing mitochondria, called hydrogenosomes, of anaerobic fungi. This was part of my PhD in the Netherlands in the group of the late Rudolf Prins and of my EMBO Fellowship in the lab of Martin Embley (now at Newcastle) at the Natural History Museum in London. Subsequently, I worked on mitochondrial remnants called mitosomes from the human parasites Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia intestinalis in the lab of Jorge Tovar at Royal Holloway. Since Novermber 2004, I am at Queen Mary, to study mitochondrial remnants in whatever shape or form they appear.

Post-docs:
Matthew Rogers (matthew.rogers{at}qmul.ac.uk).
I have a broad interest in all endosymbiotic organelles and their metabolic pathways.  My PhD work in
Patrick Keeling's lab at the University of British Columbia involved the genomics and metabolism of the secondary plastid containing protist Bigelowiella natans. My present work involves the characterization of the mitochondrial metabolism of the anaerobic stramenopile Blastocystis hominis.

PhD-students:
Karleigh Hamblin (k.hamblin{at}qmul.ac.uk).
In 2005 I finished my undergraduate degree reading biochemistry at Royal Holloway, University of London. During this time I was funded by the Wellcome Trust to undertake a summer project investigating the function of Giardia mitosomes in Jorge Tovar's lab. I also carried out my third year project in this lab. I'm now continuing research into mitochondrial remnants for my PhD.

Kerem Teralı (k.terali{at}qmul.ac.uk).
After graduating first in my class at
Istanbul Technical University (Turkey) with a BSc degree in Molecular Biology & Genetics in 2005, I moved up to St. Andrews, Scotland to study MRes Structural Proteomics at the University of St Andrews, where my fees were funded through a BBSRC Studentship. During my master's research I had the opportunity to work in the pharmaceutical industry, specifically in the area of structure-based drug design, in Vernalis Ltd (Cambridge, England). Now I am doing my PhD here at Queen Mary, University of London. I started in the fall of 2006 in the lab of Dr. Mark van der Giezen under the supervision of him, as well as Prof. Richard Pickersgill, and am funded by a Queen Mary, University of London, Research Studentship.
