The area of Cehegin was declared by the Ministry of Culture in 1982 to be "Conjunto Historico Artistico", a very important place, historically and artistically.
The current settlement of Cehegin was initiated in the middle ages, but you can find shelters, caves and cave paintings in "La Penia Rubia", dating back to the Neolithic times.
From the 6th and 7th centuries, Cehegin was known as the "city of Begastri", and there are still signs of this abandoned city.
The fortress area of Cehegin came into being during the 10th century and there is an Archaeological museum open every day in the old town of Cehegin.

Environmentally, Cehegin is one of the richest natural corners in the Murcia region, in almost 30,000 hectares, 20,000 are planted with woodland.
There are 3 footpaths between the Sierra de Burete and Sierra de la Lavia, these are signposted, leaflets and maps are available if you fancy some hillwalking.
The flora is typically Mediterranean, the fauna is diverse, from rabbits, partridges and squirrels, to golden eagles, wild boars and deer.
The area boasts rivers, lakes and reservoirs all within tranquil country settings.

The typical Spanish passion for partying can be experienced in Cehegin during the varied fiestas throughout the year.
At the end of February / beginning of March (depending on the Easter calendar), you can experience the atmosphere of "Carnival" during the fiestas leading up to lent, when parades for all the family are held. Easter has a more religous feel when more solemn processions are held in honour of local saints.
The 24th June is San Juan where the main centre of the fiesta is set in "Las Vacas", with bull running (on a minor scale!).
The patron saint of Cehegin, the virgin of "Las Maravillas" is in evidence throughout the town and she is honoured by the whole town from the 8th - 14th September with a host of family activities and fun, culminating with a fireworks display.
The final (and for the kids), most important day of the year is the 5th January, when the all important 3 Kings arrive, amid much excitement, bearing presents for all.
