Holy Island or Lindisfarne stands just off the coast at Beal, and is connected to the mainland by a causeway at low tide. The ruined Priory (top right) is in the care of English Heritage. The medieval monks are remembered for their beautifully illustrated manuscripts, some of which still survive.
The Castle (now National Trust) stands at Castle Point, looking out towards the Farne Islands and Bamburgh. (Middle right)
Near the castle sheds based on inverted boats are used for storage (bottom right).
The main street is typical for a small village (above), with stone cottages and attractive window boxes.
