What is Wargaming ?Wargaming in essentially playing with toy soldiers. The purist might crucify my but it it just playing games at the end of the day. It can be likened to chess or a board game where each player has an objective (to win) and an array of forces to complete that objective. There are rules that tell you how your forces may or may not be used and enable conflicts to be resolved. There are hundreds of sites that give a better or fuller definition but this suffices for me.
There are many different periods of wargaming from Ancients right through to modern day and even futuristic. There is also 'fantasy' wargaming which I enjoy; fantasy can get a bad rap from some quarters but it is still gaming and frankly I've no time for wargaming snobs that think it demeans the hobby. Fantasy wargaming is wargaming but with fantastical (the sort of thing found in Lord of the Rings) armies rather than historical ones. Any way, enough of my rant, let's get to the important bits. I run an annual wargames tournament called "HOTT Berkeley", it's a friendly get together of players of a ruleset called Hordes of the Things. There is a dedicated web site called The Stronghold by the God Father of HOTT, Alan Saunders. |
