Shifnal -

the town

When trying to describe Shifnal it is not easy to know where to start. This Market Town has a population of approximately 6,500 and, with its excellent access to rail and motorway networks, has so much to offer. Travelling to Shrewsbury, Wales, the West Midlands and the North is simplified by the close proximity of the M54, A5 and A41 and a rail service links Shifnal to Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton and Birmingham, with connections to London.

One of its most important assets is the friendliness of everyone who lives here. Newcomers of less than a year feel immediately at home. When walking through its streets it is very rare not to be given a “good morning”- or whatever greeting is appropriate for the time of day.

Most people who are simply passing through, and there will be lots doing just that, will be unaware of the many historical and interesting features that they are missing as they sail past. Travellers from the nearby new town of Telford will cross one of two bridges carrying them over the meandering Wesley Brook. Few will be aware of its existence or its attractive setting.

Nearby Telford has some large trading estates, which include some very prestigious companies. Naturally these companies attract many visitors, both from this country and abroad and many of them choose to stay in the high quality hotels that Shifnal has to offer. It is not that Telford is without hotels. It has some excellent ones, but Shifnal is a quiet, peaceful place offering respite from a busy working environment. The Town is well known for its first class restaurants, which offer a good variety of menus to suit all tastes. If entertainment is required, this does sometimes mean going elsewhere - but not very far. There are cinemas, theatres and night clubs within a short travelling distance, along with tourist attractions such as Weston Park, Boscobel House, the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford and the National Heritage Site at Ironbridge.

On the last Saturday in June each year, Shifnal holds a Carnival which is organised by an enthusiastic group of volunteers. The many coloured floats, marching bands, sideshows and fairground rides transform the streets into a colourful scene which is appreciated by local people and visitors alike.

Its residents take a great pride in the town. A new clock was erected in its centre by the Town Council to mark the coming of this Millennium, a project supported by public subscription. The Christmas lights in Shifnal are well known in Shropshire and acknowledged to be the best display in the area. A hard working group of volunteers along with support from the Town Council, local businesses and other organisations, join together to illuminate Shifnal at this festive time of year. On Christmas Eve a Carol Service takes place around the Town Christmas Tree. The Salvation Army Band joins with the clergy and people of Shifnal in a celebration of Christmas.

The Town provides excellent educational facilities  for all ages, with several nursery schools, two primary schools and a secondary school which  enjoys Sports College status.

All religious denominations are represented and excellent health care and services are provided. Extensive free parking is available, with all  services  a short walk from the two Town Centre Car Parks.

Shifnal is a town with excellent community links and offers visitors a warm Shropshire welcome.
