Shifnal Town Council represents the people of Shifnal as part of a three tier Local Government system. Until recently there were four representatives on the second tier of Local Government, Bridgnorth District Council but these increased to five members following the local elections in May 2003. Finally, one Shifnal representative is elected to Shropshire County Council.

The Councils are proud of their close working relationship and the results that they achieve.

Town Councillors display a wide range of experience, which they use to benefit their local community. Unlike County and District Councillors, Town Councillors are unpaid. Councillors are elected every four years. The next election is to take place in 2007. It is the policy of the Town Council to represent Shifnal and its residents in a committed and productive way.

The administration of the Council is led by the Town Clerk assisted by the Secretary. Both are long term employees committed to administering the business of the Council with maximum efficiency.

The Town Council meets twice monthly, on the first and third Thursdays of each month, except for August, when a delegated group of Councillors is available to address any necessary business, which may arise during the holiday period.

On the first Thursday of the month the Planning, Finance and General Purposes and Leisure Services Committees meet. On the third Thursday there is a meeting of the Full Council, followed by a meeting of the Planning Committee.

Councillors elect a Mayor/Chairman and a Vice Chairman of Council, and Chairman and Vice Chairman of the committees annually.

Although seating space is limited, members of the public are welcome to attend all meetings.

Minutes and agendas are displayed on Notice Boards in the Town and also in the Library.
