The Telinga System is made up of the handle, the parabolic dish and the microphone.

The handle contains the electronics to power the microphone and is somewhat similar to the body of a camera with a choice of microphones resembling interchangeable lenses that can rapidly be changed over in the field. Distant sounds are focused by the parabolic dish which gives a ten times acoustical gain effectively making the recordist 10 x closer to the sound source. The microphone is positioned at the focal point of the dish which is adjustable

The Pro 7 * series have a variety of handles to suit different recording sytems. Mono or stereo Telinga microphones can be fitted to suit your requirements.

The Pro 7: for the most discerning professional, has phantom powered, balanced outputs and the best frequency response .

The Pro 7W has its own power and is primarily for recorders that have Walkman type 3.5mm jack plugs or Sony TCD 10

The Pro 4 PIP (Plug-in-Power) with the mono microphone fixed to the handle, and is energised by the Plug In Power socket on the recorder. Low cost .

* Pro 6 has been superceded by the Pro 7, which now incorporates a modicifation to protect the microphone from accidental connection directly to a recorder instead of through the handle's cable. Although this happened rarely it was considered necessary to avoid the possibility that a user, unfamiliar with the equipment, might connect in this way and permanently damage the capsules. An additional pin in the mic connection now plug makes this impossible. Pro 6 users will still be able to order new microphones made to the old pin configuration.

INTRODUCTION TO THE TELINGA PARABOLIC MICROPHONE SYSTEM
HOME>>

All Telinga Parabolic Microphones are designed for the utmost reliablity. They are amazingly light-weight, at around a kilo, and very easy to use. Great care has been taken to solve the most common problems with wildlife recording - wind and handling noise, as well as inherent noise from the microphone and amplifiers. Telinga designs are unique. They have been developed over many years of careful research and continuously updated in co-operation with ornithologists, wildlife film makers and researchers in the field of bio-acoustics.

Unique to the Telinga is its parabolic reflector moulded out of 1.2mm trasparent impact resistant polycarbonate, with a diameter of 580mm (23inches) Virtually unbreakable even in very tough field conditions it will withstand crushing and can still be bounced back out to its previous shape, remaining useable even if a bit worse for wear. The dish is flexible and rolls up into a cigar-shape approximately 150mm (6 inches) diameter. It tolerates a wide range of temperature from -50 to +100 C.

The Universal is for the user that wishes to use his / her existing microphone in a Telinga parabolic dish.

It has been developed for the recordist who already has a 20 - 25 mm omni-directional stick microphone, like the Sennheiser ME62 or MKH20.

The Universal has a rubber-foam handle with a through-going cable which is fitted with Neutrik three pin XLRs (gold plated pins). The handle and parabolic dish are easily assembled with a large nylon threaded nut and then the user's microphone is connected to the handle's cable and gently slipped into its snug fit in the acoustic foam of the zeppelin wind-shield. Plug the male XLR from the base of the handle into the recorder and you are ready to go.

N.B. No microphone or electronics are supplied

Why Telinga Microphones make sense for the wildlife recordist

Telinga is one of the very few companies in the world focusing on equipment for the wildlife recordist. Recording outdoors, where the wanted sounds are often weak and distant, and the environmental conditions - such as wind, rain and traffic noise - are out of control, means very different priorities than for a studio microphone.

"Musts" for wildlife recording:

1 - Very good handling and wind noise performance,
2 - very low inherent noise,
3 - acoustical compensation for distance,
4 - resistance to moist and temperature changes,
5 - very easy to pack up, transport and use
.

For wildlife recording factors such as the max sound pressure level and immunity to induced electrical noise are less significant. Most of all, our focus on wildlife recording has had a strong impact on our measuring techniques: The standard techniques normally used in the studio situation have proved not to be relevant.

The Telinga approach:

For Telinga The Ultimate perfection means:-
When the object under test, in this true-to-life situation, reproduces the same sound spectrum as the reference microphone that is placed close to the source.
