'Firstly it has been said that Gilbert de Venables was closely related to Stephen of Blois, but no conclusive evidence of this has, as yet, been forth coming from records preserved in England. It is possible that, despite traditions to the contrary, Gilbert was the son of Mauger de Venables, who is said to have been in possession of that fief some years before. Clearly, more research is needed on this most important question.'
