The account of Sledmere

It is possible that Slemere came into Crompton family through the Robert's marriage to Anne Wheath. HUMAD document referes to her father Phillip as being 'of Slemer and Hinderwell'. At one time John Crompton held and sold the advowson of Hinderwell.

John Crompton of Sledmere

By 23 October 1723 John Crompton of Ruston had married Anne. [HUMAD reference DRA/1093]

From 13 March 1715 to 25 November 1723 John appears to have been involved in speculating in leasing land and the guaranteeing of mortgages (£850, £1 200) and the taking out of mortgages to support Sledmere. His activities include:

• mortgages of £1 200 (27 May 1718);
• the release of mortgages for £1 600 and £900 for the manor of & estate in Sledmore alias Sledmer (27 June 1721 - 28 June 1721); leasing land for one year to lead to the release of a mortgage for £2 000;
• a mortgage for £4,400 from John Crompton and wife Anne to John Thompson of London, merchant (undated DDSQ(2)/16/1);
• a bond for £3 000 in further assurances‘ (23 October 1723);
  exemplification of a Common Recovery by Samuel Dawson and Samuel Hilary, gents. from Nicholas Hall senr. and jnr. the manor of Little Ruston with 10 messuages and water mill, 400 ac. land, 20 ac. meadow, 20 ac. pasture and 100 s. rents with John Crompton esq. vouched to warranty (6 July 1720);
• to John Crompton of Little Ruston, esq., on redemption of a recited Mortgage of 19 - 20 May 1720 manor of Little Ruston (23 December 1722);
• 'Lease and Release' for £4,400 - John Crompton of Ruston and wife Anne to John Thompson of London, merchant (as DRA/1091), and a capital messuage in Ruston ( 23 October 1723).

There were several court cases with John and Anne being declared the deforceants:

Final Concord for £2,400: John Thompson, plaintiff and John Crompton and wife Ann, deforceants: manors of Little Ruston and Little Kelk with 20 messuages, 20 cottages, 1 water corn mill, 2 dovecoates, 20 gardens, 20 orchards, 500 ac. land, 500 ac. meadow, 500 ac. pasture, 100 ac. wood, 100 ac. heath and furze, 1000 ac. moor and £8 rents in Ruston, Little Ruston, Little Kelk, Lowthorpe, Foston and Lissett, with tithes in those places. Also a third part of 2 messuages, 2 cottages, 200 ac. land, 200 ac. meadow and 200 ac. pasture in Little Ruston (25 November 1723).
