Caleb Crompton Pears
Caleb crompton Pears was christened on 23 April 1844 at Great Driffield.
He is listed, in the 1851 census, as living at Main Street, Driffield, aged 6,
as the grandson of Martha Crompton age 66 widow.
Elizabeth Johnson, the eldest child listed in the 1881 census, was assumed to
be the daughter of Elizabeth Pears who, being born out of wedlock, has taken her
mother's maiden name.
However the GRO record of births, for the March Quarter of 1868, show an Edmund johnson Pears,
in Scarborough, which suggests that she was actually Elizabeth johnson PEARS, and this
was a transcription error or the enumerator didn't have room for both the
Christian and surname
names.
