The 1881 census records a Joseph and William Crompton living in Carnaby, in the household of Richard Chaplin, where a Crompton also lives. It is assumed that William, Joseph and Mary are brother and sister and, as their ages correspond to the IGI christening records, they are all children of William b.1808.

By the time of the 1891 census Richard, whilst remaining an agricultural labourer, and his family, which had increased by Laura K, had moved to Bridlington. It is interesting to note that Joseph R, aged 13, is neither a 'scholar', nor 'employed'.

Gertrude Crompton Niece 6 Scholar Yorks, Carnaby
This census introduces the mysterious niece Gertrude, also born in Carnaby, who had joined the household. This suggest that another Crompton family, related to Mary, was living in Carnaby at the same time as Mary and Richard. The common surname means that this person could only have been one of Mary's brothers, and therefore possibly Joseph - the only known living brother.
Mary's 'illegitimate' daughter, Emily, had left home and become a domestic servant at Hill Farm, Carnaby.

Their son Joseph had moved to Thornholme, one village from Carnaby nearer to Driffield, to live with the Robinson, one enumerator building from Manor Farm.
It is speculated that William Robinson, although a 'worker', had a responsible and well paid status of farm manger and that, all though his family had one female domestic servant, the remaining servants were employed by Manor Farm.
Joseph Chaplin appears last on the residential list, though not the youngest. This suggests that his employment, as agricultural labourer, was more menial than the younger 'horsemen'.
