At the time of the census Sarah, William's eldest daughter, was living with her grandparents in North Newbald. She is recorded as an eight year old scholar. It is suggested that the farm was too far from the village for an eight year old to walk twice a day. This census record confirms the parentage of William's wife. With 292 acres Richard Hornsey had a considerable farm. Did William Crompton manage Bullen's Farm for Richard Hornsey?

This record also introduces Richard Tindale, whose descendants married in to the Kneeshaws and then into the family of James Crompton, through John Harper.

The 1861 census shows that William and his family returned to Nafferton, where Joseph was born, around 1855. William is now classified as a farmer labourer. Is this because he was no longer able to work on the farm of his retired father in-law?

Martha in latter years

• There is no apparent Martha, born 1848 ±5 in Newbald, in the Ancestry 1881 census. A search for Newbald also finds North Newbald.
• There is no evidence of the death of a Martha in FreeBMD (All areas) between 1871 and 1891 which corresponds to Martha Crompton, born 1848, in an area of Yorkshire.
• FreeBMD Marriage search shows that a Martha Crompton married either a Fred Brant or a Henry Taylor in 3rd Quarter of 1898 in Hull vol.9d page 335.
• There is no evidence of the death of a Martha Crompton ⁄ Brant ⁄Taylor in FreeBMD (All areas) between 1891 and the end of the records in 1919.
• There is no evidence in an Ancestry search of the 1901 census for a Martha born 1848 ±5 in Newbald.

The only additional evidence could be from the 1891 census of York, though here there is an age discrepancy of seven years.
