The inquest report, in the 1896 Hull Daily Mail (qv), includes 'Mary Tate stated that she was a sister of the deceased and lived next door to him.' This has helped find Mary Frances in the various census.
By 1861, after the death of her mother Martha , James, a groom, and Mary, aged 11, lived in Low Green, Hutton Cranswick. Since Mary's husband Henry Tate, an agricultural labourer, was born in Hutton Cranswick in 1849, it is possible that they met. In census returns their first child, Thomas, is recorded as being born there. However, by 1871 her father, James, had taken the lowly position of shepherd, lodging with the farm foreman at Ganstead, north-east of Hull. There appears to be no record of Mary Crompton in the 1871 census. FreeBMD does record:

Mary and Henry's marriage is recorded in 1875, suggesting the possibility of Mary, aged 21, returning to her former home in Bridlington to give birth.

The 1891 census shows Mary Frances to be living in Carrick's Row, Preston, four census enumerator's doors from her brother Thomas. With Thomas being a widower and Mary a widow, occupied as a charwoman, it is possible that Mary was looking after Thomas and his family.
