An accident at Lowthorpe

Driffield Times
Saturday 6 September 1873

LOWTHORPE On Tuesday last, an accident occurred which terminated fatally on Wednesday. A lad went into Mr Thomas CROMPTON's stackyard with a waggon loaded with corn, when the horses, two young ones, suddenly took fright and ran away. The foreman, who was on a stack instantly jumped down and seized the horses, in order to stop them; but he was overpowered

and knocked down, one of the front wheels of the waggon passing over his body and the hind wheel driving over him before it crushing him most horribly. The poor fellow lingered until Wednesday at noon. The deceased's name is Daniel TWIDDLE, he is 26 years of age and leaves a widow and one child. - Accidental death.

GRO birth
Duggleby Margaret Elizabeth Bridlington vol. XXIII page 35 2nd Quarter 1846

Margaret elizabeth was widowed on 4 August 1890, when Thomas died. The 1891 census suggests that she took on the responsibility for the farm along with Charles william, her eldest son.

It has been established that Margaret Elizabeth Crompton was married, for the second time, to Thomas Williams in the third quarter of 1894 in Scarborough. However, in the 1901 census, even though Margaret's condition is given as 'married' Thomas Williams is not mentioned. Margaret Elizabeth appears in her widows weeds, looking like Queen Victoria, in Mary Agnes' wedding photograph dated Bridlington 20 June 1900. It is therefore assumed that Thomas Williams had recently died.

GRO death records have been searched for Thomas William's death but there is no firm evidence of a Thomas Williams dying in the East Riding between 1894 and 1901. His place of death was expected to be Scarborough, however a Thomas Williams, aged 52, died in Beverley in the 2nd quarter of 1894 (GRO ref: 9d 57).

From the evidence of John Henry Crompton's war record, made available through the Australian War Memorial, Margaret Elizabeth moved in later life. The effects of her son were sent, on 29 November 1918, to 7 Princess Royal Terrace, Scarborough. Then, on 4 November 1922, Margaret Elizabeth Williams was living at 18 Kingswood Avenue, High West Jesmond, Newcastle-on-Tyne, when The Australian National Memorial Plaque, Memorial Scroll and 'Where the Australians Rest' were sent to her. It is possible that she lived with her son Walter.

Thomas Williams - Margaret elizabeth's second husband

Thomas Williams, Margaret Elizabeth's second husband, had been married twice before.

Thomas' first wife, Mary A Swift, was born in Leeds in 1839. In 1851 her mother, much travelled for the time, was lodging in a house in Scarborough, supported by her son. Mary was recorded as another lodger.

There appears to be no obvious census data for an Ellen Lamplugh born 1831 ±2 years, in the 1861 census. In 1871 Thomas was living in the same road, with Ellen and their new son, but it was now an area of a solicitor, annuitants with servants, governess and gardener.
