George West C.B.

He was born in 1817 in Windsor but shortly after his birth his family moved to France. Returning to England he was able through contacts of his grandfather to secure a position as private secretary to the Minister of State in Egypt. He was appointed Her Majesty's Vice Consul at Suez in February 1853 and was promoted to be Consul there, October 12 1865. He was acting Consul at Alexandria for a month in 1882.

He retired on a pension on May 26 1887 and for his services to the diplomatic corps was made a Companion of the Bath by Lord Salisbury. He returned to England but died shortly afterwards in 1888 following an operation for removal of a stone.

He married Emily Lees, a widow of a good friend, who already had one daughter but this marriage produced no children. He and his wife are buried at Brookwood Cemetery in Woking.
