Implants

When natural teeth are lost there are a number of choices with regard to replacements. When conditions are suitable implants are often the preferred option.

Dental implants are small screws, usually made of pure titanium that replaces the root portion of a natural tooth. The implants are placed within the bone of the upper or lower jaw. The commercially pure titanium surface of the implant is highly bio-compatible and the surrounding bone forms an intimate and lasting bond to it.

An implant borne full denture is a dependable appliance, eliminating movement of the denture, allowing you to chew and smile with confidence.

A picture of a lower jaw with no teeth. Note how 2 implants have been placed in the jaw bone with ball like attachments coming through the gum. These ball ended attachments will click into their female components which are located in the underside of the denture (like a popper) thus providing tremendous stability.

For even more stability and strength, 4 implants can be placed and connected with as a gold bar onto which the denture clips.

SIX STAGES OF IMPLANTATION

Implant
Planning and Diagnostics
Phase I - Planning and Diagnostics
The most important phase in implant treatment is the planning phase. During this process we ascertain whether the patient is suitable for implant treatment. We also need to calculate how much bone is available to place implants and where we are going to place them. All the information that is required will be obtained from clinical assessment,
x-rays and study models.

Implant
Surgical
Phase II - Surgical
This is the phase where the implant(s) are carefully placed into the jaw bone in the correct place and at the right angulations. The procedure is performed under local aesthetic and is completely comfortable for the patient.

Implant
Healing
Phase III - Healing
The implant is allowed to heal in the jaw bone for 3-6 months. During this period the bone cells grow around the implant forming an intimate and lasting bond, a process known as ossevintegration.

Implant
Impression
Phase IV - Impression
Once ossevintegrated, an accurate impression is taken of the top of the implant, so the technician can fabricate a crown to fit on top.

Implant
Fitting Crown
Phase V - Fitting Crown
Approximately 2 weeks later, the crown will be ready to be fixed onto the top of the implant. You now have your implant supported crown restoration.

Implant
Review
Phase VI - Review
A review appointed is arranged to ensure the patient is happy with the crown and that everything is functioning properly.

ADVANTAGES OF IMPLANTS OVER BRIDGES

Implant
Fig 7
In conventional treatment (bridges - see Fig 7), adjacent teeth are ground down, thus damaging or removing healthy tooth tissue.

Implant
Fig 8
In implant treatment - see Fig 8, healthy adjacent teeth remain undamaged as the crown is supported by its own root - the implants.

Implants - the best way of providing replacement teeth that can look, feel and function like natural teeth.
