A Cup of Tea in Quetta
If travelling overland from Iran, Quetta is the first major town one comes to in Pakistan. And what a town!
The streets are a riot of all forms of land transport known to man, both modern and ancient.
Donkey carts vie for road space along with convoys of camels and the latest model Toyota Land Cruisers. Gaudily decorated buses, with as many passengers clinging to the outside as crammed within, narrowly miss an old lady ushering a gaggle of geese across a busy intersection. Everything scatters as a young man on a shiny new BMW motorbike with a shiny new Kalashnikov slung over one shoulder raises a cloud of dust.
Despite the turmoil that surrounds him, this elderly gentleman had just boiled a battered kettle on a few lumps of charcoal and was now enjoying a nice cup of tea.
