Response to the Asian Tsunami appeal in Charleton has been both impressive and heart-warming. A house-to-house collection has raised £717 so far of which all but £200 will go to the Disaster Emergency Committee. The other £200 will be donated to the Sri Lankan orphan fund. A further £500 from the Jubilee fund will buy one box for the worthy Shelter Box Appeal. Each box contains a dry shelter, a warm bed, light and heat, clean water, cooking aids and tools for ten people. An amazing £4,800, also for the Shelter Box, appeal was raised by the Kingsbridge Rotary Club by courtesy of Jeremy and Blanche Sayers of Curlew Drive who organised an impromptu coffee morning at their home. At St Mary’s, the church service collection also raised a spontaneous £150. Ashby’s Easy Stores added £150 to the £140 in the customers’ collecting tin on the shop. These are the local events I have so far learned about and all the money raised was contributed after most people had made their own personal donations. I have been asked to thank all concerned for their efforts and generosity.
Now here’s a date for your diary; Saturday 5 February at the village hall when there will be an evening of jazz and cabaret followed by a disco. Tickets, available from the Post Office, are £10 to include food and proceeds are for the Tsunami appeal.
Bill Smith tells me the village hall is for hire free of charge for this appeal so if you are organising an event or raising funds, please do let me know.
