The Guildford Light Orchestra

The Musical Director

Barrie Lee
Musical Director since 1997

Barrie Lee is, by profession, an electric engineer and has led a busy working life in this field both in the UK and overseas. Music has always occupied an active part of his life.

Starting with a local brass band whilst still at school, Barrie spent some 35 years playing the trombone in various groups ranging from the RAF station band in National Service days, through local theatre orchestras in the Midlands, especially Gilbert and Sullivan groups, culminating in many years with the Leicester Symphony orchestra.

The move from trombone desk to conductor's podium was not too difficult and a second amateur musical career started in the early 70's, as an MD predominantly in the Amateur Operatic field.

Although professional business demands increased and musical activity was sidelined for some time, the position with the Guildford Light Orchestra presented itself at a time when 'retirement' was beginning to beckon. After joining the orchestra as co-conductor in 1993, Barrie assumed the position of Musical Director in 1997 after the sad death of its founder Jack Malby. He has set out to continue the original objectives and aims of the orchestra.
