33 of our students were selected to be the warm-up act for the Northern Sinfonia's performance of Haydn's 'The Creation' during the opening concerts at The Sage Centre, Gateshead. For five weeks, students worked with two of the leading luminaries in their respective fields.
The English department were delighted to work with one of Britain's foremost traditional story-tellers - Taffy Thomas, MBE. Our Year 8 students learned the traditional art of story-telling from him, and then twelve worked with Taffy to write an original Creation Myth which they went on to perform at the Sage as a precursor to the Northern Sinfonia's performance of Haydn's 'The Creation'. In parallel, 21 of our Year 9 students were chosen to work with David Horne, one of Britain's foremost modern composers. The Year 9 students worked with David on a musical interpretation of the script produced by the Year 8 students, exploring several interpretations and instrumental possibilities. After four weeks, joint rehearsals led to refinements and the two creations were finally brought together by the 33 students. After five weeks of committed hard work and a long day at The Sage Centre, adding final touches and rehearsing staging, the final result was a magical journey that delighted the audience, and which will remain a very precious memory for all who participated or attended. The English and Music Departments are grateful, too, for the enriching experience of working with such creative talents as Taffy, David and our very creative students. |
