GCSE MEDIA
STUDIES
You will study at
least three of the following media:
- Television
- Film
- Radio
- Popular Music
- Newspapers
- Magazines and Comics
Through the study
of these media, you will learn about the following Key
Concepts:
- Media Language: forms and conventions –
these are the main features of media, such as genre, layout, content, images
and camera angles
- Audience – the appeal of media to the
general public, and how they are targeted
- Institutions – ‘behind the scenes,’
including organisations involved and their historical
development
- Representation – of people, places and
situations, including common stereotypes
Coursework
- Three written assignments, worth 25% of
the overall grade and
- one practical production with supporting
account, also worth 25%.
Assignments
Approximately
700-800 words each. You must show
understanding of the Key Concepts; analyse and comment on the media; and put
knowledge into practice through production work, such as scriptwriting and
storyboarding.
Practical
Production
You will create
your own media piece, with a supporting account of the
process.
It may be done in
small groups, though the written account must be done individually. It could be a new magazine, a television
show, adverts, pop videos or film trailers.
Controlled
Test
Worth 50% of the
overall grade.
Similar to an exam, as 4 tasks must be done in 3 hours. However, unlike most exams, you will be given the exam papers at the start of the summer term in Year 11 and you will then be able to research and prepare for the test.
