MIKE IN THE PRESS
Misquoted
in the Guardian in an interview about Bob Dylan, Mike sent a long letter (by
e-mail) and they turned it into an article - with a picture!

POP MUSIC AS RITE OF PASSAGE!
Mike has delivered a paper at the 2nd Art of Record Production academic conference hosted
by Simon Frith at Edinburgh University on the weekend of the 8th - 10th Sep.
2006. Joe Boyd was a fascinating keynote speaker on the role of the producer
and some aspects of this talk will be published in a larger interview in the
first issue of the journal shortly. Joe also took part in an industry panel on
communication in the studio with Paul Borg, Richard Burgess and Mike.
The paper is a consideration of the function performed
by pop music aimed at pre-teen, early-pubescent youth ’Äì male and female ’Äì and the
way it can act as a rite of passage that enables them to understand and engage
with the newfound emotions and urges brought on by puberty. The hormonal
changes that are universal to the human condition.
The first 8 papers for the proceedings have just been published on the website. Mike’Äôs paper will be available soon.
