Lymphatic Filariasis Support Centre
Commonly known as
elephantiasis, Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) is caused
by thread-like parasitic worms that live in the
human lymphatic system. It is one of the world's
most disfiguring and debilitating parasitic
diseases. Over 120 million people are afflicted in
83 countries, with 20% of the world's population
living in risk of the disease. It is a major cause
and consequence of poverty, preventing those
afflicted from living a normal working & social
life. Recently, advances in our understanding of the
disease and the availability of safe preventative
drug treatments, and new approaches to alleviation
of existing symptoms has created an optimism in the
scientific and public health community that at last
the disease can be eliminated as a public health
problem. This task will be accomplished by a global
partnership, the Global Programme for the
Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF), and
will prevent the next generation of children being
infected & subsequently afflicted. The Lymphatic
Filariasis Support Centre, based at the Liverpool
School of Tropical Medicine, plays a key role in
this global programme by providing advice, funding,
liaison, training and facilitation.

In April 1974 as a
result of the 1972 Local Government Act, the Fire
Brigades of Merseyside were merged into the one
Merseyside County Fire Brigade. Liverpool provided
the headquarters for this new Brigade at its Hatton
Garden offices. This building had been a Fire
Headquarters since 1899, but it became obvious in
later years that it was a bit to old for what was
now a modern community based fire service.
Modernisation saw the "Brigade" become a
"Service" that being less militaristic
perhaps sought to reflect the diverse community it
sought to protect. That was a name only however.
Modernisation in a tangible form came in February
2002 when the old Hatton Garden finally closed down
and the new Headquarters opened at Bridle Road
Bootle.
