"It's time to end this. It's time to free us of the tyranny of the now and reclaim the future as something distinct, something tangible, something we can seize and shape for ourselves. It's time to sound the death knell of the short term, throwaway, disposable culture that we live in and start dreaming again." (Gareth in Vegas)

Coasting on Empty contains my thoughts on technological progress, particularly in computer software. It appears to me that while there has been a lot of churn (e.g. C++ -> Java -> C#), there has been very little in the way of actual progress, and in many cases we've actually regressed (e.g. even before C++ was in, Smalltalk existed).

If you find this hard to accept, read The Illusion of Progress.
