The Town's Gates.

Originally, Cardiff’s 12th century timber town-palisade had only four gates. Three centuries or so later, when the timber palisade was replaced by a stone wall and a river bend had developed near Quay Street, a fifth gate was added which led to the Town Quay. The arguments against a sixth gate have already been discussed above. Between 1781 and 1802, Cardiff’s town gates fell victim to the new age of the Industrial Revolution. Development in the town had remained static for nigh on five centuries. In order to rid themselves of the shackles of those past centuries, Cardiff's inhabitants believed it best to remove all visible signs of that past.
