Kurdish Politics Kurdistan is a very rich land, it supplies Iraq with 60% of it's oil and Iran with 40%. Having mountains entirely form gold mines and Uranium has given Iran the leading role in exporting gold in the third world. Kurdistan has also a wide area of straight land suitable for agriculture, which has given Iraq, Iran and Turkey the ability to sustain their internal market without needing to export any of cereal products. Those economic factors combined with instability and humiliation that the Kurds have been facing from surrounding countries, Kurds have always been in revolution. Those governments have always been trying to eliminate the Kurdish identity and have been used every possible tool to integrate Kurds into their nations (Arabs in Iraq, Turks in Turkey, Persians in Iran). Those tools include being band from speaking, writing and reading Kurdish language in addition to destroying thousands of Kurdish villages, towns and cities and exercising ethnic cleansing in a large scale. That is all said, the notorious chemical bombing of Kurdish cities in northern Iraq by the Baathe's party has added another dimension into the suffering of Kurdish people. On the other hand Kurdish movements have never let those governments to settle down and benefit form all resources in Kurdistan. Kurds has been defending their land, culture and national identity by every means and struggled for a long time to establish their political entity. The political changes in Iraq at present is a result of the continuous efforts by Kurds in northern Iraq to change the regime in Baghdad and establish a democratic government in Iraq. |
