Data Protection and Freedom of Information
Under the terms of the Data Protection Act, those who collect and use information about individuals are required to maintain accurate and secure records and to comply with the principles listed in the Act.

Individuals about whom information may be held, include : clients, patients, tenants and others who have a relationship with an organisation or company.

"Records" are interpreted as data held in computers and in some paper-based record-keeping systems.

"Data" is intended to cover both factual information about an individual as well as opinions about him/her.

Non-compliance with the Act may result in legal proceedings and fines, against the data-holder
