Information Surveys and Audits
In order to be able to manage information efficiently, it is first necessary to be aware of existing information assets, resources or entities and their formats.

One of the major difficulties in conducting an information survey or audit is distinguishing between "information" and the technology used to manage it.

In many cases, the task of compiling an organisational information assets inventory is assigned to the IT department. While this may seem logical, as IT staff are regarded as having the deepest understanding of "data", databases, operating systems and other technological components, their interest and professionalism lies with the technology rather than with the information managed by it.
