EHBG has been running its first course of weekly talks (Traditional Buildings of Essex and Beyond, Oct to
Dec 2009, in Chelmsford). To enable the committee to gauge demand, please complete and return this

PREFERRED COURSE*
All courses would be given by either Alan Bayford (AB) or Anne Padfield (AP), as indicated. Both are
experienced adult education tutors. All courses are based on slide lectures, supplemented by illustrative
handouts. Students are encouraged to ask questions throughout and to bring their own expertise or
experience into discussions. A class visit can be arranged for most courses.
HEARTH AND HOME: The History of Chimneys and Fireplaces (AP) (6 weeks) ......
Suitable as an introduction to a longer vernacular architecture course. Includes social history of heating
and cooking.
TRADITIONAL BUILDINGS OF ESSEX (AB) (6 weeks) ......
Broad introduction to vernacular buildings in Essex: social context, layout, materials, construction.
TRADITIONAL BUILDINGS OF ESSEX AND BEYOND (AB) (10 weeks) ......
As above but covering Essex, selected English counties and another European country.
MEDIAEVAL ESSEX HOUSES (AP) (10 weeks) ......
Vernacular buildings, materials of construction, styles, functions of rooms. Historical and social context.
How houses reflect the lives of their occupiers.
16th- AND 17th-CENTURY ESSEX HOUSES (AP) (10 weeks) ......
As above for a later period, when change was rapid - from timber to brick, mediaeval to early modern.
TOLSEYS AND TAVERNS: Traditional ‘Community’ Buildings (AP) (10 weeks) ......
Vernacular buildings other than houses: guildhalls, market houses, shops, inns etc. Emphasis on social
context as well as structure.
TRADITIONAL ESSEX FARM BUILDINGS AND THEIR HISTORY (AP) (10 weeks) ......
Barns, stables, granaries etc. How to identify one from another. Farming history as reflected in surviving
buildings.
TRACING THE HISTORY OF YOUR HOUSE (AP) (6 weeks) ......
Use of documents, maps and other records as well as analysing buildings. Visit to Essex Record Office cabe arranged.
ESSEX BUILDINGS AND LANDSCAPE: Prehistoric to Plantagenet (AB) (6 weeks) ......
History of the man-made landscape, buildings known from archaeology, establishment of towns, castles,
churches, monasteries, the first permanent housing.
ESSEX BUILDINGS AND LANDSCAPE: Plantagenet to Tudor (AB) (6 weeks) ......
Continuing story of rural and urban landscape and buildings, including improvements in housing.
ESSEX BUILDINGS AND LANDSCAPE: Prehistoric to Tudor (AB) (10 weeks) ......
