ap Gwilym in modern
English translations. The five translations by Dr Rachel Bromwich, Emeritus
Reader in Celtic Languages and Literature at the University of Cambridge, are
faithful to the structure and content of Dafydd's
poetry and are an excellent aid to understanding the original Welsh, as well
as being excellent translations in their own right. The 14 translations by Rolfe Humphries, an American academic, poet and
translator, are freer in their approach to the structure and the imagery of
the originals for they are not so much simple translations as poems in
English equivalent to those of Dafydd. The combined
work of the translators gives as good an idea as is possible of both the
content and form of the original poems and the artistic and emotional quality
of Dafydd.
