In The Guilt Card, a shattering disclosure changes forever the relationship of two middle-aged sisters... Black Comedy By Peter Shaffer
Peter Shaffer is well-known for his dramas, such as Royal Hunt of the Sun, Amadeus and Lettuce and Lovage but Black Comedy showcases his talent for farce. Written in 1965 for Laurence Olivier (then director of the National Theatre), it was first performed at the Chichester Festival with a cast that included Derek Jacobi, Albert Finney and Maggie Smith. It has been tremendously popular with audiences ever since and was last seen in the West End in 1998. Brindsley, a struggling sculptor, and his debutante fiancée Carol, await the arrival of her father, the formidable Colonel Melkett and George Bamberger, a German millionaire. They hope that Bamberger will buy some of Brindsley's work and the Colonel will allow them to marry. To impress Bamberger, they have 'borrowed' some valuable furniture from Brindsley's neighbour, antiques dealer Harold Gorringe. When the totally unexpected happens . . . their plans collapse. Unwanted guests and mistaken identities add to the confusion and the evening gradually descends into total chaos. |
