Background
Barrie started racing cyclo-cross
at the age of 14, this was long before mountain biking had arrived. Since
then he has won both the National Cyclo-Cross & Mountain Bike Championships
and has represented Great Britain at the World Cyclo-Cross & Mountain Bike
Championships many times. Barrie is also an accomplished road rider. As a
member of the national team, he won the "King of the Mountains" title in the
British Milk Race. The following year mountain biking was taking off in
Britain. Having competed in a few mountain bike events that year and having
started cycling from an off-road background - mountain biking became
Barrie's number one discipline. Due to the priorities of his British based
sponsor, the majority of his racing has been in Britain. But on a limited
international schedule, Barrie has achieved some notable results as listed
below, with many top 10 results in the World Cup series. Barrie won the
Mountain Bike Tour of Spain in 1995 and finished second to Rune Hoydahl in
the 1996 Tour of Britain.Since then he has been one of the riders to beat in
domestic racing. He missed out on Olympic selection in 2000 due to a serious
injury to his wrist. In 2002 he was selected for Team England for the
Manchester Commonwealth Games where in front of a huge (+50,000) crowd
finished a credible 6th. 2003 saw Barrie still one of the men to beat at
home. He finished 3rd in the National cross-country mountain bike series,
second in the National Championships and a close second in the National
Cyclo-cross series.
2004 – Giant Racing
The Giant team won the National
Team title at the cyclo-cross Championships in January. We dominated the
Enduro 6 by winning most categories. Our experience helped us win Mountain
Mayhem 24 hour race. I was in the winning pair in the new Trek 6-4-2
series. This year I have been working more and my cycling has suffered on
occasions, but I have a completely renovated house now to live in the the
Lakes. A hernia operation in October prevented my from racing cyclo-cross.
Other Interests
Barrie lives in the Lake District
now and is keen on many outdoor pursuits. He enjoys walking, biking and
taking pictures in the hills.
In November 2000 Barrie was invited to Nepal for an international mountain
bike race, he won the race then went trekking in the Annapurna Himalayan
range for ten days. With living in the Lake District and having an interest
in the hills, walking has formed part of his winter training (see picture
gallery).
