Macclesfield Supacross - 29th December '02

This is the traditional "between Christmas and New Year" event. Over the previous seven years I have won 4 times and local boy Nick Craig has won three.  It is either very fast when it is frozen or wet and muddy at South Park Macclesfield.  This year it was wet, a lot like the National Trophy at Rainham two weeks earlier.

With this event everyone starts together, all lined up across one long start line. I made a fair start in about fourth place at the first corner behind Ian Wilkinson, Nick Craig and Chris Young. Nick and I had soon opened a gap over the rest with Phil Dixon, Rob Jebb and Daniel Alexander behind.  The lap had been shortened from previous events, removing some of the trickier muddy sections. The ground was so wet that all the riders became very wet from the spray. It was freezing!

Both Nick and I tried to open a gap over each other but to no avail. With a lap to go Nick made a big effort to escape but I brought him back. I was expecting him to attack at the small log at the final pit area, but he caught me a little by surprise as he went from the hurdle before. This small gap was enough to hold me off to the finish. So that makes it four all - the local crowd (mainly Nick's mates) loved it!
