| World mtb Championships - Kaprun Austria |
Wednesday 28th August was the World Championships relay. This year the Worlds are being held in Kaprun Austria. The relay event has become over the past years the opening event of a Championships. One lap of the cross-country circuit is completed by a junior, U23, Senior Man and Woman. There is no set order of the riders to set off so it can be a race right down to the line, even if it looks that a team has a huge lead with a lap to go. This year Canada won for the second consecutive year, using the strengths of Rowland Green and Alison Sydor. GB team was Liam Killeen, Oli Beckingsale, Steven Clarke and Caroline Alexander - they finished 8th.
In the evening was the opening ceremony in Zell Am See. This involved a parade with national flags and some long speeches from some "suits". You would have thought officials would have learnt that bike riders a) don't like standing up b) aren't that interested in long speeches c) especially in a foreign language that are translated to make them twice as long! There was meant to be some lake jumping after the speeches but we had left before that!
