Cyclo-Cross SiS Mega Cross - Whalley |
Science in Sport Mega Cross - 27th October '02
This weekend was a wet and windy one. It was not a National Trophy event but it was still up to Trophy standards. Science in Sport put on a Cat. A 'cross at Whalley College. The course was reasonably flat, very wet, with a three dismounts on the relatively short lap.
The start was about a mile away in the village of Whalley. The police closed the road and we raced up to the college course. Spectating were the local mayor and even the local MP! After half a lap of the course three of us had started to pull away, Stuart Wearmouth, Paul Oldham and I. I kept the pressure on at the front and slowly opened a gap. Stuart lost some ground at one point as he came off. This gave me a gap of about 15 seconds which is how it stood for most of the race. It was not that straight forward in reality. The gap stayed between 15 and 25 seconds. Stuart made a big effort to try and catch me with three laps to go, he took back a few seconds, but then paid the price for his big effort and my teammate paul Oldham passed him with a lap to go to take second place. So it was Helly Hansen - Giant one, two.
Victoria Wilkinson won the women's event, much to everyone's amusement one of her prized was an ironing board! She took it very well as I'm sure some women would have wrapped it around SiS's Phil's head!!!
