Booths Time trial - Windermere

bulletBooths Supermarket - Timetrail Windermere.

Sunday 14th April 2002

Yes I did a time trail - on the road.. on a road bike..but with mtb shoes on, no special helmet, I did succumb to little spinachi tri-bars though. It was not just some tin pot time trail but the first in the National circuit race series. These are made up of  "sporting course" events around the country. This means they are not up and down a very busy main road with too much traffic but around a twisty circuit that is quite challenging.

With time trails they seed the field and fast riders are given a 5 or a 0 start time. Somehow I was given a 5, even though I have not ridden a time trail at in the U.K. for years. Stuart Dangerfield, Michael Hutchinson, and the full Compensation Group road race team were but a few of the big names I noted on the start sheet. These specialist TTers can go fast. They have all the special equipment, low profile bikes, fast tyres, tri-bars, funny helmets everything to make them go a bit faster. With the course on some of the roads that I know well from training I hoped to do a "half decent" ride. I did not really know what that would be, but top 20 looked like it was possible.

There was some rain as the early starters left, this made the road slippery. My start time was 9:25am (the first at 8am) so I had a bit of time for the rain to clear and it to warm up a bit. On my SRM box the temperature read 4'C. I opted for knee warmers and arm warmers. The course was pretty much around the Lake Windermere. This is up and down and quite twisty. There are a couple of steep climbs one of which called Devil's Gallop which was quite long. You can see these on the SRM power trace (the green peaks near the start and at 30mins). The average power is shown at 341W (this is about the middle of my zone 5) and the average cadence at 85 rpm. I tried hard but just can't go the speed that is required on the flat. A bigger stronger rider can produce more power and therefore goes faster. Saying that the winner Stuart Dangerfield is quite a small rider so must be able to produce a lot of watts and have very good technique. I finished 19th...ok...less than a minute behind John Tanner. MTBer Caroline Alexander won the women's event in 1:09:51.
