Philae and Abu Simbel

From Aswan we visited the temples of Philae, just south of the city, and Abu Simbel, three hours' drive south across the desert. Both of these temples were rescued from the waters of Lake Nasser, formed by the Aswan High Dam, and rebuilt on higher ground. The rock-cut temple of Abu Simbel, with its huge statues of Rameses II and its decorated interior, was the highlight of my visit to Egypt.
